The state which has the most area codes is California with 35 area codes.

In second place is Texas with 27, in third place is the state of New York with 19 area codes and in fourth place is Florida with 18.

The reason for this is that these states are the most populated states and therefore the ones with the highest number of telephones.

In other words, California, having the largest population and therefore the most telephone numbers, is the state which has the most area codes.
